My research and teaching have been in service of community. At UCLA, I have gone about planting roots through collaborating, organizing, and mentoring. With Laura E. Enriquez, Ariana J. Valle, and Vilma Ortiz, I revived the Department of Sociology Race/Ethnicity Working Group. I have worked toward more inclusive faculty hiring practices as co-president of the Sociology Graduate Student Association (with Christopher M. Rea). I have served as a mentor for undergraduate students in the Sociology Honors Thesis Program, a peer mentor for incoming PhD students, and as departmental Fellowship Coordinator, in which capacity I guided doctoral students through their successful applications to funding bodies such as the Ford and National Science Foundations. I continue to serve on panels about research, graduate school, funding, and professional development for the UCLA Department of Asian American Studies and my alma mater, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
